[edit] Installation
The Giraffe release was very carefully crafted to be as easy to install (drop in replacement) as the archos firmware. Though there are of course things we cannot foresee. The cleanest and most reliable way to install is:
- backup your data!
- if not yet applied - install and run the bootloader hack as detailed at http://www.pointlisse.com/PMA430/index.cfm?articleID=66 Step 2
- format the PMA harddrive
- create a Folder called "System"
- copy aimage.img and openpma.img from the release zip file into System
- boot your pma
[edit] Migration from openPMA 0.1 or 0.1.1
We recommend running a full check of the FAT32 filesystem on the PMA harddrive from your desktop computer. (on Windows use CHKDSK, scandisk won't work!)
Make sure you have at least 2GiB of free space on the PMA. The Installer will create a 1GiB "hidden" Partition as a replacement to progfs.img.
Get the zip file and copy both aimage.img and openpma.img to the "System" directory of your PMA.
Reboot.
[edit] Migration from Archos firmware:
Andrew has a nice guide on his page: http://www.pointlisse.com/PMA430/html/showArticle.cfm?articleID=66
[edit] Release Notes
The current ChangeLog can be found here: http://svn.openpma.org/svn/openpma/trunk/tools/Changelog
A french version is also available: http://svn.openpma.org/svn/openpma/trunk/tools/Changelog_fr
It is recommended to uninstall and reinstall all software packages from the openPMA feed. We've updated many of them!
[edit] new features
- Now using second "hidden" partition instead of fragile progfs.img
- Unionfs with system partition to have everything writeable.
- free'd 6MiB of RAM by moving less used things from aimage to the partition.
- Dutch translation
- Bluetooth support (especially for dialup)
- Fixed and improved Embeddedconsole terminal application
- Vastly improved Virtual keyboard
- Samba for PMA - GUI frontend for Windows style file shares and control of built in file server.
- Support for new hardware devices (USB-Ethernet, USB-WLAN, USB-Serial)
- updated applications in package feed (available via Software Packages applet)
[edit] Known Issues:
- If you want to use the dutch localization you MUST disable the handwriting input plugin - else qtopia will lock up on startup. (fixed in svn trunk for fresh installs)
- Corsair wants to save its settings and files in /root now. If you want the old behaviour - look at the Tips&Tricks Page.
- If first boot fails due to "not enough space" make sure to CHKDSK/fsck.vfat from your PC.
- First boot may really take long if there is not much free space on the drive and then installer needs to shuffle it around to have enough space for the new partition.
- /opt/QtPalmtop has disappared:
A few users had problems when the symbolic link /opt/QtPalmtop disappeared after upgrade to openPMA v0.2 and certain program installations.
At the moment there's no final solution because the reason to this is still unknown, so here's a way to check & correct. Please note that a few programs might need /opt/QtPalmtop as installation folder, so they will fail if it isn't there.
open console (terminal), type
ls /opt if okay, it will show (in diff. colors if one is a symbolic link and the other is a folder): QtPalmtop Qtopia if not, you will only see: Qtopia In the 2nd case, you have to create it yourself: ln -s /opt/Qtopia /opt/QtPalmtop
If you don't like to type this, you can also use the already mentioned TreeExplorer to create this symbolic link (copy, paste-symbolic link, rename).
[edit] Trouble Shooting *BANG*
- If the unit halts on boot process you can use the wipe solution if everything else fails
- If you have grey icons of your deinstalled software you can install the TreeExplorer and delete the coresponding .desktop files
- If your problem is not listed here subscribe to the users mailing list and ask for help there!

[edit] Full Wipe Solution
This will delete all data on your pma, first step is to make a BACKUP
- if your PMA is booted: shut it down cleanly from the Settings Menu
- connect a USB cable from your computer to the PMA
- now switch the PMA on (it should stay on the colourful boot screen)
- backup all your music and video files and other data stored on your pma (on linux you should unmount the partition afterwards)
- fire up an partitioning tool
- Windows: "START","RUN","diskmgmt.msc"
- look for the drive letter your pma got in Explorer
- notice there is a second partition at the _end_
- rightclick on the second partition (it should be smaller than 1GiB)
- select "delete partition"
- do you really reallly want.. bla bla - "YES"
- rightclick on the first partition
- select format
- make sure you format to FAT32 - if you set NTFS your pma wont boot and you'll have to use tricks
- Linux: use e.g. gparted
- make sure you selected the correct disk (you dont want to delete your desktop data)
- delete the second partition on your pma
- format the first partition to fat32
- Windows: "START","RUN","diskmgmt.msc"
- create a "System" folder on the first partition and copy aimage.img and openpma.img into it (on linux you should unmount the partition afterwards)
- detach
- wait for device to boot
