1. The Archos 605/604 wifi units can be accessed via an ssh command line thanks to fiat's GFT hack [1]

The hack requires an active wifi connection and must be implemented after each reboot (On the 605 it stays active after a suspend/resume, just reconnect wifi)

2. Openpma member bubu has demonstrated the capability to run an alternative desktop environment Qtopia (Now owned by Nokia , thanks Fairlight) [2]

3. Further investigations reveal the following:

A: On the 605 a superior audio player is possible, enabling audio while browsing and internet streaming [3] (Suspend/Resume is used to unlock the audio device /dev/dsp, on the 604 it doesn't seem possible)

B: The pdf viewer can be rotated sideways [4]

C: The volume can go louder [5]

D: The Opera browser can have a scrollbar and be used to browse the entire filesystem [6] [7]

E: SDL apps are possible, allowing for, potentially, some great emulators (Nintendo, Spectrum etc) [8]

F: Simple custom made apps accessing the framebuffer are possible, and console games like gnuchess are easy to port. [9] (You install the Archos GPL Toolchain, then you apply bubu's openPMA patch (follow the instructions here)) This will give you a gcc arm cross-compiler on your linux machine in /opt/openpma-ng/arm-linux/bin/gcc)

G: There are many ready made qt apps which can be ported to the Archos [10] [11] [12]
